My blood sugar has been way out of whack and I am noticing an acute sensitivity to cold. Tonight I literally thought it was in the 20's or 30's and it was 50 degrees! When I got home and checked my blood sugar, it was 500!
Also, my blood sugar has been consistently in the 300's since I was diagnosed in 1988. I have periods where I have gone off sugar and eaten healthily but I am curious why I am still alive cuz I am told that is very dangerous to have for sustained time periods. Am I unusual?

Refined sugar (table sugar) should be considered as poison to one's body, and simply avoided. Many people will try to eliminate sugar from their diet and will instead substitute an artificial sweetener. This can be as bad, or worse, than the thing they are trying to avoid. The sugar addiction can be broken, but it means eating healthful foods in place of unhealthy ones and it takes a little time. Once broken, though, candy bars will no longer be tempting.
There are also some healthy subsitutes that can help while trying to break the sugar addiction. I used to keep dates on hand and whenever I started craving something sweet, I'd eat a few dates and almonds. It was just like eating a candy bar. I'm not saying one should eat a lot of sugar even in that manner, but it does help when you are first making the change. I hardly ever eat dates any more because they are so sweet. Your tastes actually do change and you will start to crave the things that are good for you instead of the things that are not.
One good alternative is Stevia. It is an herb and is labeled as a "supplement" in the health food stores. By law, it cannot be labeled as a sweetener (too much competition for Aspartame, apparently), but it is about 300 times sweeter than refined sugar, so you don't need much. It comes in power or liquid form and can be used in baking as well.
I don't know if I have answered your question, but if you have too much sugar in your blood, then diet is an obvious place to look to correct the problem.
